The Canadian Red Cross Babysitting course, refreshed and revised, now has a greater emphasis on First Aid skills. We are pleased to offer this program in an online/virtual format and request that you closely follow the instructions for completion should you register for this course. The Canadian Red Cross Babysitting course covers everything from managing difficult behaviors to essential content on leadership and professional conduct as a babysitter. Babysitting promises to deepen and enhance the responsibility that older youth feel when caring for younger children. This updated curriculum, complete with new science, also provides improved learning when it comes to giving the appropriate care in the event of an emergency.
Course schedule
Our online session will run from 9am - 3pm, with one (1) hour taken for lunch (12-1pm). Prior to attending the online session, participants will complete assigned homework/reading (~2 to 3 hrs) either individually or with the help of family. Details on required homework will be sent to participants after registration is recieved.
Prerequisites
This course is designed for participants aged 11 to 15. Completion of Grade 5 for those not yet 11 years of age qualifies per Canadian Red Cross guidelines.
The Virtual Classroom has been developed in response to the increaing shift to online learning during the Covid-19 crisis. To be eligible to complete the Babysitting program it is essential that participants and their parents/guardians follow the requirements below carefully.
Course Requirements
Computer Access
As this classroom is virtual, participant will need to have access to a computer or tablet with reliable Internet access, a web camera, speakers and microphone. The course is offered through Zoom, and faciliated by a Canadian Red Cross Youth Leader. BFA will email a link to the virtual classroom a minimum of 48hrs prior to the classroom session. You do not have to subscribe to Zoom to connect to the classroom. **Participants MUST have their video and audio on for the whole session as 100% attendance is required for this program.
Adult Supervision
Participants in this program MUST have an adult on-site with the learner for the duration of the virtual classroom session. The adult is not required to be on camera, or to participate in the virtual session, but must be present to assist the learner if necessary.
Email address
Each child must have an email address that can be used to register their completion with the Canadian Red Cross. Email addresses that have been previously registered through the Red Cross cannot be used. For example, if a parent/guardian chooses to use their own email address for the participant and this address has been previously used for first aid training with Canadian Red Cross.
Course Materials
Provided by BFA: Participant text will be provided to you prior to the start of the course, along with any required paperwork/study material. You may pick up this Babysitting package prior to the classroom session at our office in St. John's, or to receive the package by mail via Canada Post. We close registration for each course one (1) week prior to the start date so that participants may receive their course packages.
Babysitters training package also includes the following items (provided as part of course fee):
- 1 x pair of medical gloves (non-latex)
- 1 x gauze dressing
- 1 x roller bandage
- 1 x bandaid
- 1 x triangular bandage
- 1 x diaper
- baby wipes
Items NOT included in course fee - participant must provide*:
- doll or stuffed toy (doll preferable)
- baby bottle, spoon, bib, bowl, spoon, cup

- First Aid Content:
- Check, Call, Care (includes phoning EMS/911)
- Glove removal
- Recovery position
- Conscious choking (adult/child/baby/alone)
- CPR (baby/child)
- Illness
- Asthma (includes use of inhaler and spacer)
- Anaphylaxis (includes use of EpiPen)
- Poisoning
- Insect stings
- Wound care (i.e. minor cuts and scrapes, splinters, nosebleeds, bumps and bruises, life-threatening bleeding, burns)
- Head, neck and back injuries
- Broken bones
- Seizures
